Iceland: 5 Days

This 5-day Iceland itinerary offers a perfect mix of adventure and relaxation, taking you through the breathtaking landscapes of the Land of Fire and Ice. From the iconic Blue Lagoon to the majestic waterfalls and the otherworldly glaciers, each day is packed with unforgettable experiences. Whether you’re chasing the northern lights or soaking in a geothermal hot spring, this journey will immerse you in Iceland’s natural wonders and unique beauty.

Day 1: Arrival and Golden Circle Adventure

Straight off the airplane, our first stop was the iconic Blue Lagoon. This geothermal spa, renowned for its milky-blue waters, offers a serene experience perfect for shaking off travel fatigue. Entry costs around $60-100, depending on the package. Rejuvenated, we drove to the Golden Circle, a three-hour loop showcasing Iceland’s natural wonders. We marveled at Thingvellir, where two tectonic plates meet, and Geysir, erupting every 1-10 minutes. As we reached Seljalandsfoss at sunset, we had a serendipitous moment, walking behind the waterfall and witnessing its majesty illuminated by the setting sun.

Day 2: Waterfalls and Whiteout Adventures

Our day began at Skógafoss, a massive waterfall where we hiked to the top for breathtaking views. Next, we explored Kvernufoss, a waterfall straight out of a magical movie like “The Hobbit” or “Avatar.” From there, we trekked to the US Navy Douglas Super DC-3, a plane crash-landed on black sands in 1973. Lunch at The Soup Company in Vik, featuring their heavenly black lava soup in a bread bowl, was a highlight. Driving through a snowstorm with no distinction between road, sky, and land, we finally arrived at Diamond Beach for sunset, greeted by seals and stunning ice formations.

Day 3: Glaciers, Black Sands, and Yoda Cave

We started our day at Skaftafell, touching our first glacier and feeling like we had stepped onto another planet. Reynisfjara, a black sand beach with basalt columns, nearly blew us away with its fierce winds. Despite the weather, we ventured to the famous Yoda Cave, exhausted but thrilled by our discoveries. That night, we hoped to see the northern lights, but the skies remained cloudy.

Day 4: Craters, Hot Springs, and Northern Lights

Our day began with an attempt to see Dyrhólaey, a natural arch among the cliffs, followed by a visit to Kerid Crater, a volcanic lake where we walked inside the crater. Next, we hiked to Reykjadalur, a hot spring thermal river. The strong sulfur smell on the hike was worth it for the magical experience of soaking in hot water surrounded by snow. We ended our day driving back to Reykjavík, where our dream came true as we witnessed the aurora borealis for the first time, a faint green glow dancing in the sky, visible even to the naked eye.

Day 5: A Relaxing Final Day

Completely worn out and preparing for our flight, we kept our final day relaxed. We started with a sunrise visit to Íslendingur, the famous Viking ship, followed by a stop at Brauð & Co, an amazing bakery. After shopping for souvenirs in Reykjavík, we began our journey to the airport, hearts full of unforgettable memories from Iceland’s land of fire and ice.

This trip to Iceland was a whirlwind of natural beauty and adventure, from the serene Blue Lagoon to the awe-inspiring northern lights. Each day brought new surprises, leaving us with memories that will last a lifetime. I highly recommend taking the time to explore this incredible country and perhaps even extending your stay to fully embrace all that Iceland has to offer. I hope to get back and discover the magic of the midnight summer sun, I think Iceland has so much to offer in each season.
